An extremely rare Schützentaler 1827 from Zug
Lot 581
SWITZERLAND. Zug. Stadt. Schützentaler 1827 (Silver, 41 mm, 26.13 g, 12 h), on the Shooting Society in Zug. By J. C. Bruppacher. Luzern. TUGIUM City view. Rev. SCHÜTZENGESELLSCH: - DER STADT ZUG. Nike with laurel wreath and palm fond standing atop of column, Justice on left seated to right, holding scales, hands clasp with Minerva seated to left holding fasces with shield at side. Martin 989. Richter 1670c. Wielandt 146. Wunderly 1801. Extremely rare, mintage of only about 150 pieces. Slightly cleaned and minor marks, otherwise, extremely fine.

From the collection of Kurt Zimmermann (* 1937) of Winterthur, long-serving numismatist at Schweizerische Kreditanstalt and Leu Numismatik, privately acquired from Dr. F. Sternberg in October 1962.

This extraordinary and extremely rare piece is frequently described as a medal, yet its weight and diameter match those of a Taler. Indeed, Tobler-Meyer’s standard reference already classified it as a Shooting Taler (W. Tobler-Meyer: Die Münz- und Medaillensammlung des Herrn Hans Wunderly-von Muralt, Part I, Vol. II, p. 379, no. 1801, Zürich 1869).
